I took my usual shortcut through Mass John's pasture and as I was going under the barbed wire fence, I heard a most terrible sound. It sounded like a very horrible monster from my nightmares and at the same time it sounded like an animal in pain. I was so startled that my shirt got caught up in the barbed wire and in my bid to escape, it was torn and my back was badly scratched. Trembling from head to feet, I managed to make my way under the wire fence. I heard the terrible sound again and I tried to run but my legs wouldn't move.
