In this honest, passionate autobiography, Penny James welcomes you to experience her transition from a young beauty contest winner in Colorado to a world-renowned fashion model whose career spanned eleven years with the Wilhelmina & Ford agencies. Penny appeared on five Playboy covers, refusing to do a centerfold. She was part of the 1960s and 1970s party scenes in Chicago and New York City. During the course of a difficult marriage and later divorce from her husband of twenty years, Penny became an alcoholic with dangerous addiction and self-esteem challenges. Her healing journey began in AA, where she developed a deep relationship with God. In the eighties, the author purchased a 100-year-old farmhouse in Pennsylvania, where she communed with wildlife and nature, ultimately growing into the wise, enlightened woman who wrote this story - her own story - to move, inspire and, possibly, save others. Penny's faith in God was fierce and unwavering; it was her strength on her darkest days. She believed that we are ALL connected on God's earth. A favorite expression she spoke often was, "zero degrees of separation." Penny James passed away on April 11, 2019. Her sister's promise on Penny's death bed was to finish this book and get it published. This precious gift to the world is part of Penny's beautiful legacy.

ââ?¬Å"How Nature Healed a Broken Soul: An Autobiographyââ?¬Â? by Penny James tells the powerful, emotional journey of a young Colorado beauty contest winner/ turned internationally famous fashion model/ turned wounded alcoholic, who found healing and solace in nature. The highs and lows are the stuff of movies, yet Pennyââ?¬â?¢s story is true. No longer with us, Penny left behind a legacy for others to learn from, enjoy, and pass on to others. Her transformative journey can help save lives. From Playboy cover girl to a Pennsylvania farmhouse dweller and believer in God, Pennyââ?¬â?¢s story will resonate with everyone.
Ms. James pulls back the curtain in a painfully honest way about her early years as a beauty pageant winner and top model and tells unflinchingly of her descent into alcohol and self-doubt. This part of her life took place during the 1960s and 70s Chicago and New York City party scenes. You will read about how she refused to do a Playboy centerfold, and then how she navigated the rough terrain of divorce after a twenty-year marriage that was rocky, to say the least.
But unlike a lot of people who lose their lives to alcohol and despair, Pennys story has a hopeful ending. She began to heal when she entered Alcoholics Anonymous and bought a Pennsylvania farmhouse that was over 100 years old. Getting close to nature and wildlife, as well as her relationship with God is what saved her and preserved her in dark times. This life story is an example of how a broken life can be put back together.
The writing is engaging, the narrative is compelling, and you will be left with a feeling of satisfaction and hope by the time you reach the final page. My favorite parts are when she describes her experiences with nature and God, and what she learned about herself during her lifeââ?¬â?¢s journey. At the very end are questions from readers and reflections. If you are looking for an inspiring story that can help lift you out of a dark place and set you on the road to recovery and self-esteem, ââ?¬Å"How Nature Healed a Broken Soulââ?¬Â? by Penny James should be at the top of your reading list. It is hard to stop once you start reading.
