When I was a little girl, I remember this being my favorite book to read. I don't know what happened to it, so I searched for it on the internet and fortunately found it through Alibris. I purchased it for my just learned to read, 6 yr. old daughter and it turned out to be an even better gift than I had hoped. Normally, I have to read through a book with her to give her an idea of how the story goes. However, with this book, she just picked up the book and began to flip through the pages. She started to sound out the words and realized that she was getting them right and the story was coming together and making sense. It was SO COOL to see that light bulb go on for her. This was the first book that she had been able to read on her own without someone reading through it with her first. She was TOTALLY jazzed! When we got home, all she wanted to do was read it to anyone who would listen. She read it to her dad, to her kindergarten class, etc. It is now her favorite book and as my husband use to say when he was her age, "that fills my heart with gladness!" On a practical note, the pictures are bright and engaging. The sentences are short and the story has a nice flow and a great message on building relationships and finding commonalities. I only wish that it was not out of print. It was DEFINITELY worth the $22.50 that I paid for it to see that delight on my daughter's face.
