The people of Israel had presented to them " a shadow of good things to come;" and, perhaps, the manifestations which God made of himself to them, as well as their ceremonial institutions, were intended to affect them through the medium of the more earthly sensibilities. To their prophets the veil which hides futurity was occasionally lifted, and far down the vista of time, they saw a mighty personage, whose sublime achievements, and the vastness and glory" of whose reign, stretching out to eternity, kindled up their souls; and whatever was great or magnificent in nature, they laid hold of to image forth what they beheld. But in the New Testament, Jesus Christ "is set forth crucified" in the simplest and most unadorned language. In writing their narratives, the feelings of the Evangelists seem to have been continually held in check. This fact has, with great propriety, been adduced by an eminent writer as a proof of their inspiration. The New Testament is not without its poetry; but it is chiefly the poetry of the moral feelings--feelings too pure and ethereal to be represented by objects of sense--the expression of love, of contrition, of firm faith, and of holy joy; "Jesus Christ: whom having not seen ye love, in whom, though now ye see him not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory." If preachers would study the style and manner of our Lord and his Apostles, they would see that it is not their business to excite the mind by imagery, but to endeavour to convince the understanding, and "Saturday Evening," by the Author of " Natural History of Enthusiasm: " one of the first intellectual writers of the present age.
