In recent years, Prophet has been fooling about with different rock forms as well as production techniques, but seldom on his own records. This band, and it is a band, comes up with slinky, darkly tinged, street-smart vignettes from the seamy side of modern life in the West. Indeed, the ten songs here could have been written by Tom Petty were he not stuck in a time-warp prison of his own design, and instead wrote about what he really thinks and the people he really meets as opposed to idealized stereotypes of mythological Americans lost in a world that never existed anyway. Finch is a cosmopolitan motel reporter. She's seen it all go down behind the drawn curtains and felt it through before writing a word. She sings without any feigned earnestness and a refreshingly un-jaded reserve. She's a fine rhythm guitarist as well. Prophet creates sonic backdrops for her words that include his own myriad guitar styles and instruments, including everything from Moogs, Farfisas, turntables, kettle drums, mando-guitars, and sitars to a string section. The rest of the players take his direction and embellish wherever necessary, all of their efforts serving the song. There isn't a weak track on this set, which may go over with the most adventurous of the alt-country set but will more likely appeal to those who enjoy literary, timeless, solidly written, and exquisitely performed rock and pop songs. The most notable tracks are "Let's Stay Here," "Channel 9," "Trouble," "Annie Oakley," "Dead," and "Rainmaker." This is a very fine debut -- one that challenges everything out there while being so pleasant to listen to you may forget that it's so edgy. Highly recommended. ~ Thom Jurek, Rovi
