Though I live in a small, hardcrabble, redneck town in the Arizona desert, Hotel Pastis transports me to a quaint village in the South of France where I can sip wine with locals, engage in witty conversation (in French!) and nibble on the local cuisine. As usual with a Mayle novel, the main character here is the French countryside and that's how it should be (a recent Hollywood movie just didn't get that fact). The writing here is seemingly effortless and the characters amiable. For 329 breezy pages, I am somewhere else. And isn't that what a good novel should do?
