At length he retired from the sea and established himself as a " merchant" in Boston; he owned, bought and sold ships and other craft; imported sugar and other foreign commodities; owned a share of Central Wharf, on which his store was situated, and the whole of Constitution Wharf. In 1845 he built a satisfactory home for himself and family at "Oakland," as he called it, in Dorchester; later resided in Boston. He was a very successful merchant and popular gentleman. He died Nov. 26, 1869. We are happy to give his portrait. Children: i. Ada Ripley, ' b. Sept. 17, 1847; m. April 7,1869, Brigadier-General Charles Bradley Stoughton. He was son of Hon. Henry E. and Laura E. (Clark) Stoughton, and was born at Chester, Vt., Oct. 31, 1841. Grad. Norwich University, Vt., A. B., in 1861, hon. LL.D., 1884. Did service at the opening of the War of the Rebellion as drillmaster; was commissioned adjutant of the 4th Vermont Vol. Infantry, Aug. 4, 1861; major Feb. 25, 1862; It. col. July 17, 1862; colonel Nov. 5, 1862. Did gallant service in the famous "Vermont Brigade " in the Sixth Army Corps. Lost his right eye from a wound July 10, 1863; was honorably discharged Feb. 2, 1864, and made brevet brigadier-general March 13, 1865," for gallantry in the field." He studied law with his father at Bellows Falls, Vt., and practised at New Haven, Ct. He d. at Bellows Falls, Vt., Jan. 17, 1898. Hist. Norw. Univ. Children: 1. Ada Hooper Stoughton, b.
