Anchored by the brilliant bass playing of ex-Butthole Surfer Jeff Pinkus, Honky may suffer from some inherent recording flaws, but it is buoyed by its unself-conscious, humorous Southern boogie. With vocal chores distributed between this Texas trio, the band may resemble in nature an underground ZZ Top, and certainly borrows the flavor of Top's earlier efforts. Like many Texas recording artists of note -- Willie Nelson, Butthole Surfers, the Dicks, and Big Boys -- Honky relies on a laid-back, humorous approach to music: solid musicianship, nothing taken too seriously beyond having a good time, and pleasing the crowd. What emerges here is a solid debut album blood-rooted as much in Southern rock as it is in punk rock.
