Mother has put garlands of evergreen upon the white counterpane, and has made the room very cheerful with wreaths of holly and the white immortelle, but she cannot keep back the tears, as she thinks of the dear voice, now so silent, and of the godly presence that will be so missed among them. Then she remembers what a ripe old age God has vouchsafed him, and how free from disease he has been, --passing away in a quiet sleep, and awaking to the raptures of the better land, and her tears are changed to joy, so that she can speak calmly to the children about him and give them the true idea of the Christian's exit from this world--"he is not, for God has taken him." "Uncle Tom" is the hardest to reconcile and comfort; he comes expecting to have a review of the old days with his brother, and finds his place by the fireside vacant, and he is so uneasy and troubled, that they take him home again, where he soon forgets all but the memory of what has been when he and his brother were boys together. Bessie misses her grandfather sadly; she will never more have so genial a companion; she thinks, "What shall I do when the summer-time comes?
