But attention is also drawn to less lavishly produced but very pleasant musical offerings from both major and minor studios (including perhaps the finest "B" musical ever made). In all, 125 pictures are reviewed and detailed with full cast and technical credits, plus songs and musical numbers, awards, release dates and other essential background information.

I've always maintained that Hollywood's greatest gift to entertainment was the movie musical. True, other countries made musicals too. (A few of them like "Moulin Rouge", "The Mikado" and "Limelight" are even included in this book. You'll notice though that they usually feature Hollywood stars). But U.S. musicals have a monopoly on talent and production values. Many of the most lavish and most tuneful are featured in this book -- a very useful offering now that many of these wonderful productions are now available on DVD. No-one wants to be caught with an expensive DVD that seems most promising but turns out to be a dud. I remember my local neighborhood cinema seemed to be always running "Somebody Loves Me". Betty Hutton was super-popular (and there she is in full color on the back cover of this book), thanks to "Annie Get Your Gun". But "Somebody Loves Me" is a dreary movie, as this book notes, in which two minor character actors, Henry Slate and Sid Tomack, are handed the best song! As usual for the books in this series, every movie is given the full treatment of exhaustive cast and camera credits, including all the songs and their performers, release dates, background information, etc., as well as reviews.
