This CD is somewhat a blend of United Nations of Earth and the Heavenly Orchestra from on high. I bought it having heard and loved Jonn Serrie's "O Magnum Mysterium" over the holidays and thought I'd like more ("The Little Drummer Boy" might be the best version I've ever heard), but discovered many more wondrous pieces once I listened to this. There's not a weak piece on here. "Winterflame" (probably my favorite) evokes an image of angels (or if you are a devotee of Tolkien, Galadriel, Arwen, et al.) floating down a runway displaying their Christmas finery. "Poets & Angels" definitely evokes a Hispanic air (reviewer in liner notes calls it flamenco) that makes me think that it is not only the British Empire that's cornered the market on Yuletide Carols! A very short piece is "Hodie Christus natus est;" but the piece that immediately follows ("Spirit Evermore") seems to flow naturally after it. "Carol of the Bells" has always been one of my top five Christmas carols, and this version of Lorie Line's almost defies description. If you buy this, you might want to read the liner notes before you play it to get an idea of what is in store for you. I will only add that there seemed a touch of Mannheim in the drumming. I will close by remarking on the quintessential Christmas carol, "Silent Night," brilliantly rendered by Cusco. There's no version that is not beautiful, but I think this is the only one where a choir hums and sighs its way through, rather than singing words. It allowed me to feel as if my spirit was exalted. And isn't that what Christmas music is all about? Blessings to all, especially the performers on this CD.
