The first in a series of transition years when the pop charts gradually gave over from vocal- and jazz-based pop to forms based on rock, 1955 was the year of Pérez Prado's "Cherry Pink and Apple Blossom White," the biggest hit of the year, but also the year of Bill Haley's "Rock Around the Clock," ranked third or fourth. (One year later, Elvis Presley would become a major force in the commercial realm, and begin turning the tides for good.) As such, the Living Era compilation Hits of '55 is a hodgepodge of throwback vocal music and crossovers from several realms -- basically, the most popular songs on the radio, in the stores, and in the jukeboxes, which ranged from the sedate vocal harmonies of the McGuire Sisters' "Sincerely" and the Platters' "Only You" to the leathery double enténdres of Georgia Gibbs' "Dance with Me, Henry" and her other major hit, "Tweedle Dee." Apart from R&B, country & western was also a large influence on the charts, with "Sixteen Tons" by Tennessee Ernie Ford ranking as one of the five biggest records of the year, and crossover material appearing from Mitch Miller ("The Yellow Rose of Texas"), Jimmy Young ("The Man from Laramie," a movie title), and Bill Hayes (the million-selling television theme "Ballad of Davy Crockett"). Aside from these, Hits of '55 also includes a few rather interesting hits that are rarely compiled, such as "The Crazy Otto" by Johnny Maddox and a much-parodied hit by Joan Weber, "Let Me Go, Lover." ~ John Bush, Rovi
