Needless to say, music did move toward the silly side in 1950 -- maybe it was just the public and the media trying to give everyone a break from thinking about the atomic bomb, China, Korea, etc. This CD slides from the sublime to the ridiculous and back again, with the Mills Brothers ("Daddy's Little Girl") and Billy Eckstine ("My Foolish Heart") representing some of the classier entries. Actually, Karas' zither instrumental and the closing track, "Goodnight Irene" by Gordon Jenkins and the Weavers, both represented distinctly new sounds on the charts. And if that doesn't make this volume worth checking out, anyone who hasn't heard Page's rendition of "The Tennessee Waltz" owes it to themselves to see what early-'50s pop vocal music could sound like at its best.
