Various. Very Good. William Prescott offers a thorough history of the sixteenth century King of Spain in this leather bound first edition. A first edition of William Prescott's account of the reign of Philip II of Spain, also known as Philip the Prudent. With a frontispiece to each volume, a folding plate to volume I, and another plate to volume II, collated and complete. Written by one of the most eminent historians of nineteenth century, William Hickling Prescott, these volumes provide a detailed history of the reigns of Philip. Phillip was King of Spain from 1556, King of Portugal from 1580, and King of Naples and Sicily from 1554 until his death in 1598. He was also Duke of Milan from 1540, and from 1555, he was Lord of the Seventeen Provinces of the Netherlands. Prior owner's ink inscription to the recto of the front free endpaper, 'C James'. In a red quarter calf binding over cloth boards. Externally, rather smart. Lightly rubbed to the boards and the front joint of volume II. Volume II is also a little rubbed to the head of the spine. Internally, firmly bound, with bright and clean pages throughout. Very Good.
