Grossly Misdescribed
This book is grossly misdescribed ; if you are looking for a history book on Anti Catholic propaganda then you would probably have difficulty finding a better book. As a general guide to the range and reason for American bigotry, it is far too narrow in focus. As a non American ; my vision of America is based on Hollywood films. According to the Hollywood image ; America is a Catholic country which hates Indians and Negroes. The book is written in two parts with a pre-WW2 by one author and a supplementary post-WW2 by another author. I would need to swallow a dictionary to follow all the university fancy words used in this book; although you can still follow the book without having to resort to looking them up. According to US made TV documentaries, the Indian wars raged on for 200 years and the bigotry from these wars is still dormant in American culture today. The American Civil War was reputed to have been fought about the political side issues created by slavery of Negroes. I fail to grasp how any book can claim to be about American bigotry and ignore the two largest examples of it. The greatest failing of this book is the complete lack of attempting to explain the roots of this bigotry. The nearest the author gets to this is to blame it on the English influence. While this is totally justified while America was a English/British colony, it is noticeable that in Victorian times as Britain was softening its anti Catholic laws; American Protestant groups decided to become even more antagonistic to Catholics.
