ACTON PARISH comprises the several townships of Acton, Aston Jnxta Mondrum, Ansterson, Babbington, Brindley, Burland, Cholmondstone, Coole Pilate, Edleston, Faddily, Henhnll, Hurlstone, Newhall, Poole, Soond, Stoke, and Worleston; conjointly containing a population of 4,134 souls. ACTON a township and small village pleasantly situated on the Chester road, 1 mils N. from Nantwich contains 722 aeres of land, the soil of which is a mixture of clay and sand. About 16 aeres are in roads. In 1841, there were 62 houses, and 321 inhabitants. Population in 1801, 262; in 1831, 309. Rateable valne 1,939 9s. l6d. The manor of Acton, which had been anciently parcel of the barony of Wich-Malbank, passed by a co-heiress of Warren de Vernon, to the Littleburys, who sold their share of the barony, (an eighteenth part), inclnding the manors of Acton, Hurlestone, and Dorfield Hall, to John de Wettenhall. Ellen, sister and co-heiress of John de Wettenhall, married Sir Henry Ardern, whose son Sir Ralph, appears to have died siesed of the manors in 1420. Yet, about the year 1464, they were conveyed by the heirs, male, of the Wettenhalls, to the feoffees in trust for the use of Sir John Bromley, who passed the estates to Lord Stanley. In 1522, Thomas, Earl of Derby died possessed of this property, which, it is conjectured, he held merely in trust, for the Bromleys then had possession of Dorfold hall, and bad resided there for several generations.
