And his Trattato has been very justly esteemed for its complete set of plans and sections of the princi pal sacred edifices in and about J erusalem8. Viewed as an architectural work, it is much better than could be expected for the time, and his minute statements Of measurements, whenever fairly tested, have proved sin gularly accurate9. His View of the modern City from the Mount of Olives is not equal to his more detailed drawings of particular buildings, but his restoration of the ancient City pays more regard to the actual forma tion of the ground than those Of his predecessors, and does not attempt the identification Of so many sites. It is however replete with errors, owing mainly to his attempt to reconcile the then received notions of Old Jerusalem, originated by Brocardus, with the existing features of the City, without a sufficient acquaintance with J osephus - almost the sole authority on the subject.
