Seller's Description:
Fair. London, 1815. First edition in two volumes. 3/4 leather with marbled boards. Front boards detached, but spine and title and volume labels are in good condition. Volume II has a 3/4" chip at head, with tape. Title label is missing. Pencil signature of J. F. (Julia French) Hamilton, wife of Charles Hamilton, grandson of Alexander Hamilton. Text is in very good condition and text block is square and sound. Politician, author, and advocate, Wraxall's life threaded in and out of the intrigues and events of the last years of the royal European courts. His Historical Memoirs appeared in 1815, when he subsequently removed to Wraxall House, Charlton Kings, near Cheltenham. They and the Posthumous Memoirs (1836) are very readable and have real historical value. Wraxall believed that the government of the day, furious at his truthfulness, was behind a libel action which sent him to prison for three months in 1816. Hence the posthumous publication of the later memoirs. The quality of the text is lovely. Not available for priority/expedited shipping. Due to the size/weight of this book extra charges may apply for international shipping.
