We have little account of the siege; but according to Manouchi, who was there, the Mogul's army was E e obliged obliged to raise and carry on a vast mound of earth, sussicient for the display of several batteries, until the assailants and; desenders were brought to the brunt of standing sight on the fame level. In April the besieged made a sally, by whichthey got possession of the mound, and maintained it until they had ruined the batteries, with all the artillery, and part of the mound itlelf. This destruction wasnot quite repaired before the rains began in June, which gave a farther respite In August sultan Azim arrived with the supplies he had been sent to bring; when Aurengzebe committed the continuanceof the siege to his conduct, and retired to a distant encampmeut. In the mean time the garrison had received no supplies of provisions, stores, or men, to replace what had "been consumed; nor expected any; but still determined to stand the assault at the breach; which sultan Azim avoided by purchasing the treachery of two or three of the principal ossicers, with whom he conceited an attack on their guard guard in the night, when they agreed to 1687. abandon the desence, and kept their promise. It was on the twenty-seventh of September, The garrison, although surprised, made resistance; but could not prevent numbers from pouring in sussi'cient to overwhelm them all, when the slaughter became desperate. The King, concealed himself in the meanest ossice of his palace, from whence he was draged, unknown, and had well nigh, been killed in the mistake. In the morning he was carried to sultan Azim, whosuffered him to continue standing several hours in the fun, waiting admittance, but relenting when he saw him, permitted him to sit;...
