A low headstone to a sunken grave in the old Presbyterian Churchyard, just back of the grim Nixon inclosure of tragic memories, bears the following quaint inscription, rudely cut: Here Lies The Body of Agnes of Glasgow, who departed this life Feb. 12, 1780. Aged 20. It is a desolate spot, overgrown with tall grasses and matted myrtle, and almost hidden from view by overhanging vines and drooping boughs of cedar. A fitting sepuicher, you will say, for a broken heart! Aye so, for thus the pretty old legend has it; and many a pilgrim finds his way to the ancient tomb, with its queer epitaph, and pauses there in a sort of fascination born of mystery. Agnes, a winsome Scotch lassie, had given her heart to a brave young soldier who had embarked with the British army for the American war. Tidings from her betrothed came seldom and finally ceased altogether. This the true-hearted girl could not endure, so, without the consent or knowledge of her family, she set out to find him, taking passage in a sailing vessel that, weathering many storms, brought her safely over. But here her sufferings had but begun. The British camps were scattered all along the Atlantic coast and his command was unknown to her. A second Evangeline she wandered, until, almost in despair, from fatigues and disappointments, she learned that he was with Rawdon at Camden. From Georgetown, friendly Indians brought her, in a birch canoe, up the winding waters to this point. With hope renewed, she rushed to Headquarters and called her lover's name. A rough soldier brusquely informed her that he was dead--there, pointing through the open window, was his new-made grave. The curtain soon fell upon the little tragedy.
