Respected by many in the West as well as in the East, the Dalai Lama (who does not claim special stature as a teacher, healer, or religious figure) asked that the listeners not expect great changes in their lives to come from the turning of the calendar or from the external world - but to look inside themselves for transformation and new attitudes, and to focus on helping others. Noting that the spread of democracy and an increasing interest in human rights are positive signs for the coming century, he expressed concern about the violent conflicts that continue throughout the world, and the disparity of living standards between the rich and poor in every country. He expressed a hope that, during the 21st century, nations will work toward disarmament and devote themselves to diplomacy.
