Readers of this collection of essays will be compelled to reevaluate their understanding of the history and politics underlying the decision to use atomic weapons on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Kai Bird and Lawrence Lifschultz draw together a distinguished group of international historians and writers (including six Nobel Prize recipients) whose careful research has pierced the rationales for the atomic bombing presented by the Truman administration follwing the annihilation of the civilian population in both cities. Hiroshima's Shadow carefully retraces the steps leading to the decision to use atomic weapons. Important elements of this research became an integral part of the planned 1995 Enola Gay exhibit at the Smithsonian's Air and Space Museum. The exhibit was first censored and then ultimately canceled despite the condemnation of the Organization of American Historians.
