Prof. West was an articulate and perceptive watchdog on the administration at Dartmouth College during his 42 years of teaching there. In this little fable, published the year I graduated, he reveals what could likely happen to that small college should its thrust become even more focused on fund-raising alone. Sadly, it appears that his apprehensions have been realized. This opus is especially meaningful to loyal Dartmouth alumni, but affiliates of sister institutions should heed West's message as well.
