Galang's short stories, while centering around the struggles of Filipino-Americans, specifically women, can be enjoyed by everyone. The thoughtful prose illuminates several societal pressures that minorities face without getting too heavy-handed. In such a short amount of space for each story, Galang has the gift of presenting characters that we grow emotionally attached to and sympathize with in such a short space of time.
I particularly enjoyed the later, more developed stories, such as "Figures," "Miss Teenage Sampaguita," and "Filming Sausage." "Figures" deals with a young women making the compromise between what she thinks she wants and what her parents want for her, deftly dealing with the intricacies of human emotions. Ann, a young artist, loves her boyfriend Harold and marries him, although she isn't entirely sure whether she wanted to or not, if she did it because her parents were pressuring her to or not. "Miss Teenage Sampaguita" deals with similar issues and generational conflict between a father and daughter, as well as a brother-sister. "Filming Sausage" is perhaps the most memorable as a young Asian woman, Elena, gets continually sexually harassed by her white boss, finding herself in unbearable situations.
All of the stories are complex and deal with issues that cannot be readily resolved, but provide for interesting and thought-provoking discussion.
