Mononuclear phagocytes are important components of a network of cellular and immune mechanisms which affect the integrated response to foreign agents such as infecting organisms and tumour cells. Hemopoietic growth factors have potent effects on cellular development and function. The availability of hemopoietic growth factors and other cytokines through recombinant DNA technology has encouraged the investigation of a broad spectrum of potential therapeutic uses. This volume brings together a group of experts in the field of macrophage activation to discuss recent research results and their possible clinical applications. The effects of granulocytemacrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) on the mononuclear phagocyte cell line are especially interesting as these cells play a pivotal role in the immune response. Very exciting results are emerging from experimental work which could have important implications for the clinical use of GM-CSF.
