The number of women in state prisons has increased at twice the rate of the number of men in state prisons. The number of incarcerated women in 2015 was nine times the number of women incarcerated in 1978 (Sawyer, 2018). The number of women serving sentences of more than a year grew by 757% between 1977 and 2004-nearly twice the 388% increase in the male prison population. Between 2000 and 2010, the rates of increase in women in the correctional system were more than double the rates of men (Glaze & Kaeble, 2014)"--
