A welcome addition
There are only a few books on the fighting in New Guinea during World War II. This fine book is a welcome and much needed addition to the literature. It tells the story from the Australian viewpoint, a refreshing change from the usual American view. The narrative is interwoven with personal diaries, recollections and letters from both Australian and Japanese soldiers, as well as official sources. Fighting in the prehistoric mountains and jungles of New Guinea, the sacrifices of ordinary Australian soldiers are prominently featured. The author writes in an easy style that keeps the reader riveted to the page. This book is a must-have for any WW II historian and a gripping yarn for the casual reader.
