I am a huge Hammett fan and stayed away from this book for a long time, fearing it would be a kiss and tell. Not so.
It rounds out some of the rough egdes (and there were many) of Dash's life, especially in his latter years when he seemed quite vulnerable. Not that Hammett needed a protector, he could well handle things on his own. Just like the OP.
Its worth a read.
