On the basis of his training in ancient literature, archaeology and philosophy, Schlosser was able to develop a deeper perspective critical of his colleagues Alois Riegl and Max Dvorak, in an 'approach' familiar to the English speaking world from the work of Ernst Gombrich and Otto Kurz who continued it at times very literally. "The Literature of Art: A Manual for Source Work in the History of Early Modern European Art Theory" is his grand opus, presenting annotated bibliography of all works he could find describing art, including through travel guides from the medieval period through the nineteenth century.
