In a rack the teeth are simply set at an angle. CHAPTER VII. MOULDING HELICAL SPUES AND BEVELS BY MACHINE. The mode of operation of moulding helical spur-wheels by machine is modified by the presence or absence of shrouding, and by the sectional shape of the arms. I will take first the case of a plain unshrouded wheel, with arms of H section. The wheel may be moulded in the foundry floor or in a moulding flask, dependent chiefly upon its diameter, but partly upon what flasks happen to be in stock. Large wheels are usually moulded in the floor, small ones in a flask on the table of the machine. I will take first the case of a wheel moulded in the floor, and suppose that it has no shrouds, and then I will take the case of one moulded in flasks and provided with half shrouding. When a wheel is moulded in the floor, the first thing is to lay down a coke bed. This covers the same area as the wheel, and is laid to a depth of from eight to twelve inches below the lower face of the mould. Coarse cinders and hay intermixed are laid to a thickness of five or six inches (Fig. 60, D), and one or more vent-pipes are brought up in a diagonal direction from the bed to a spot outside the mould, and above the floor line (Fig. 60, E). Over the bed the sand is shovelled in and trodden down, and lightly flat-rammed to a suitable depth, --anything from about eight to twelve inches, dependent upon the G weight of the mould. The bed is then struck level and to shape.
