Nothing good stays away forever, and this particular disc of some of Villa-Lobos' more accessible orchestral compositions is an excellent option for listeners who'd like to know this music, but are not in the know as where to start, given Villa-Lobos' productivity in this genre. The selection ranges from 1919's Dança frenética to 1953's Alvorada na floresta tropical: Overture, but there is little variance in style among these pieces, as they all come from the side of Villa-Lobos' output that combines Brazilian folklore with post-impressionistic composition, a very appealing combination that shouldn't be difficult for anyone who likes, say, Respighi, to follow.
