This is an anthology of representative works from the vast field of the post-biblical literature of the Jews. To the uninitiated, Hebrew literature is synonymous with the Bible, while the Talmud and all other religious and philosophical writings of the early rabbis are almost inaccessible because of the lack of suitable translation. The Talmud is an inexhaustible storehouse of Jewish law, lore, and legend that reflects the morals, beliefs, and aspirations of the people during the several centuries of its formation. In so extensive an encyclopedic work it is unavoidable that many irrelevant absurdities will find their way. These have given rise to many false notions about the exact nature of the Talmud. It is undeniable, however, that this monumental work, especially its legal and ethical portions had great influence on the non-Jewish world. This volume contains, besides the Talmud, also selections from the Midrash, a legendary exposition of the Bible, rich in parable and folk-say. The Kabbalah or mystical interpretation of Holy Writ as well as many illuminating passages from the writings of the later medieval period are also included in this volume. At the end of the book, there is an explanation of the various feasts and festivals of the Jews.
