Much Of the new material is taken directly from Professor Allen's writings while Director Of the Laboratory during the last year of his life. Several Of the chapters have been entirely rewritten and a more logical arrangement has been adopted. The entire book has been thoroughly revised and slightly enlarged. The aim has been to increase in every possible way its value as a college text book, in which field it has come to be widely used. Acknowledgment is made to Prof. H. C. Anderson of the University Of Michigan for his valuable advice and criticism and to the many others who have contributed various material, credit for which is given throughout the book.
