The method used by Mr.Horsley is an interesting one, but it led him to some wrong conclusions. One of the author's principal aims was a noble one - to read/listen the Mark's Gospel with the eyes/ears of its first readers/listeners. But Horsley himself listens to Mark as a reader of 20-th century. It's not enough to describe the political circumstances of the 1-st century - the most important is to understand how the first generation of Mark's readers looked at their rulers and events they have witnessed through their believes, through the characters & events of Bible and Pagan's sacred literature. Another, more grave shortcoming is the method itself - to read Mark as a whole story. That's why many precious details escaped from his view and, as a result, he came to the wrong conclusion about the principal conflicts of the Gospel. However, I like his point of view at Mark as a tense story, as a dramatic tale - rather then boring and useless explication of the religious ideas. The most fascinating pages in the book are devoted to Jesus' disciples.
