While Jeremias' classic THE PARABLES OF JESUS is my first and basic reference, Perkins gives me key pastoral insights into the Parables of Jesus that I regularly share with my faith community. Her format gives not only the Synoptics' parallel versions of the Parables, but also the literary analysis, historical background, the human as well as religious significance of each Parable for modern United States faithful. Each chapter ends with study guide questions that could be of help in starting dialogue about Jesus' teaching and its application to today. I have Eta Linnemann,Bernard Scott, and Arland Hultgren's commentaries on the Parables as well. But of them all the one that most attracts my eye, informs and encourages my faith is Pheme Perkins' HEARING THE PARABLES OF JESUS.
