Healthful Living, was originally published by the Medical Missionary Board, Battle Creek, Michigan, under the title Instruction Relating to the Principles of Healthful Living. So popular when it first came out that it became necessary to come out with a second and then a third edition the first year. We have reproduced this 1898 third edition which also contained two additional chapters, God in Nature and The Spirit Filled Life. In the third edition an appendix of parallel Scripture references was included. This Scripture referenced appendix will be found exceedingly helpful in making clear to the mind of the reader the fact that the principles presented in this work are not mere human inventions; but are a part of the divine order appointed for the human family at the beginning, and which is to be restored when all things are made new. Wherever it has been received, this book has been recognized as a veritable storehouse of seed thoughts relating to the great practical themes with which it deals.

Ellen White was a true fanatic when it came to both religion and health - she married to two together. For those who wish to research the sources - often quoted in other books, this one is exceeding useful. Adventists often accuse others of lying about what is stated concerning Ellen White whom they believe was an infallible messenger of God (see SDA fundamental article of faith #18). For instance, White often believed that some foods were aphrodisiacs or contributed toward arousing ones 'animal passions'. To quote #928 in this book "You place upon your table butter, eggs, and meat and your children partake of them. They are fed with the very things that will excite their animal passions, and then you come to meetings and ask God to bless and save your children." White did have a multitude of health problems during her lifetime, having spent several periods of time in sanitariums caused originally by a stone smacked into her face by another child when she was 9 years old - she almost died. Some researchers credit her deviant views to a brain injury she may have suffered during that time. This book may likely reflect the viewpoint of other health addicts contemporary to Ellen White as she was known to plagiarize the works of other authors.
