Seller's Description:
Various. Good Only. A three volume set of the dramatics works and poetry of Samuel Jackson Pratt 'Harvest-Home consisting of Supplementary Gleanings; Original Dramas and Poems, Contributions of Literary Friends and Select Re-publications including Sympathy, a Poem' by Mr. Pratt with a portrait to frontispiece to volume one. Revised, corrected and enlarge from the eighth edition. In three volumes complete. With a dedication to the Prince of Wales to front of volume one. Samuel Jackson Pratt (1749-1814) was a prolific English poet, dramatist and novelist, writing under the pseudonym of Courtney Melmoth as well as under his own name. He authored around forty publications between 1770 and 1810, some of which are still published today, and is probably best remembered as the author of Emma Corbett: or the Miseries of Civil War, (1780) and the poem Sympathy (1788). Although his reputation was tainted by scandal during his lifetime, he is today recognised as an early campaigner for Animal Rights and the first English writer to treat the American Revolution as a legitimate subject for literature. In half calf bindings with marbled paper covered boards. Externally, generally sound but with some wear to extremities, rubbing and marks to boards and institutional lettering to spines. One board detached, one almost detached, one held by cords only, and three starting with loss to some backstrips. Institutional bookplates and ink annotations to front endpapers and blindstamps to pages. Internally, text block generally firmly bound but with first few pages to volume one detached due to joint. Pages are generally bright and clean, with slight scattered foxing and the odd ink annotation. Good Only.

Seller's Description:
None. Very Good. The collected works of the prolific English poet, dramatist and novelist, Samuel Jackson Pratt, including the revised edition of his poem Sympathy. Complete in three volumes with a frontispiece portrait of the author to Volume I. Pratt authored around 40 publications between 1770 and 1810, some of which are still published today, and is probably best remembered as the author of Emma Corbett: or the Miseries of Civil War, (1780) and the poem Sympathy (1788). Although his reputation was tainted by scandal during his lifetime, he is today recognised as an early campaigner for Animal Rights and the first English writer to treat the American Revolution as a legitimate subject for literature. Critical reception to Pratt's works was mixed during his lifetime. His scandalous "sham marriage" and the public furore over his "unnatural and shocking" novel The Pupil of Pleasure damaged his reputation, giving him a 'dubious moral character' which deterred respectable readers. His poem Sympathy, however, was noted for its 'feeling, energy and beauty." In half-calf bindings with marbled boards. Externally sound, with some wear to the spines and extremities. Front and rear joints of Volumes I and II starting, but firm. Internally, firmly bound. Armorial bookplate of 'William Edward Armstrong' to front pastedown of each. Neat ink signature to title pages. Pages are bright with just some scattered light spotting, particularly to the first and last few pages. Very Good.
