This novel is one of Frank E Smedley's best known works. It was first issued in 1855. This is a one-volume edition of the work. In a half morocco binding with paper covered boards. Externally, generally smart with rubbing to the paper covered boards. Further light rubbing to the joints and to the extremities. Bumping to the extremities. Light rubbing to the raised bands. Front hinge is strained but firm. Internally, firmly bound. Tidemark to the first few pages. Pages are generally bright with scattered spots. Very Good.

Phiz. Very Good. A presumed first edition of this famous work by Frank E Smeldey Undated as called for and consistent with the 1855 first edition. With an ink inscription from 1856. Complete with 28 plates, a frontispiece and an illustrated title page, all by Phiz. Francis Edward Smedley was an English novelist. This is one of his best known works though he was also very popular for his contributions to Sharpe's London Magazine, which were published in book form as 'Frank Fairlegh'. Phiz was the pseyduonym for English illustrator and artist Halbot Knight Browne, best known for his illustrations of the works of Charles Dickens. In a half calf binding with marbled boards. Externally, sound with light rubbing and slight lifting to marbled paper. Book is slightly cocked. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright with marginal spotting and handling marks throughout. Ink signature to front blank dated 1856. Very Good.
