Academy Award nominee Daniel Barber (The Tonto Woman) makes his feature directorial debut with this gritty critique on contemporary British society starring Michael Caine as an elderly shut-in who's spurred to action by a senseless act of violence. Harry Brown (Caine) resides in a desolate public-housing apartment block as his sickly wife lies dying in a local hospital. He spends most of his days in solitude, only getting out to play the occasional game of chess at a nearby pub with his best friend, Leonard (David Bradley). The days of basic human decency seem to be a thing of the past, because in recent years barbarous drug dealers and gangsters have overtaken the dilapidated complex. Killing is a way of life for these young thugs, and as a result overburdened detectives Frampton (Emily Mortimer) and Hicock (Charlie Creed-Miles) are essentially relegated to knocking on doors and notifying parents when their children have been killed in the latest fracas, instead of investigating the crimes and jailing the guilty parties. When Leonard is murdered just feet from his own apartment, former Royal Marine Harry utilizes the skills he learned while fighting the IRA to take on the aggressive chavs who have intimidated the police into inaction. It's not often a film with such violence keeps disciplined reins on the whole to give us cinema with integrity, guts, and an interesting and absorbing view of the subject matter. This time it's the deterioration of youth against a backdrop of high-rise housing, drugs and physical and verbal abuse.
Harry Brown (Michael Caine) and his friend, Leonard Attwell (David Bradley) play chess at the local pub, the Barge Inn, in between visits to his dying wife, Kath. They both live on a housing estate in obviously the poorer part of town, where the local youth are out of control, meeting in gangs and threatening the inhabitants, shooting a woman as she wheeled her baby in a pram simply because they had guns.
Leonard comes to the attention of a group of youths, and it's his ultimate fate that decides Harry Brown (ex marine) on a course of avengement. Michael Caine's Harry is a quiet man with a determined courage against all odds. After all, these kids have it in the bag, neither hampered by conscience nor morals.
The acting is superb. Special mention to Sean Harris as Stretch, and Liam Cunningham as Sid, Publican of the Barge Inn. A truly must-see film.
