I've never been able to resist a good fairy tale, and here is an entire volume of them, done up as only Patricia A. McKillip could do. Of course when we grow up they're called short stories and they're harder to write and we get more critical reading them. As short stories, this collection is delicious and satisfying, properly making us think, and leaving us thinking still, long after we?ve finished. . As fairy tales, they ought to evoke a fear or two, and these have just enough shadow to do the trick. Crafted with the precision of a master sculptor, it's as if McKillip had read into my soul and then wrote stories to challenge and reflect it. . The book opens with the title story, Harrowing the Dragon. A slightly veiled creation story, with a real dragon and a real hero, it explores the timeless issues of the individual vs. the collective, new vs. old, destruction in the name of protection, even environmental damage and unintended consequences. And that?s only the first story. . If you?re looking for a bit of substance with your entertainment, this might just be the thing. If you have yet to discover the joy of short stories, Start Here. And if you already know the work of Patricia A.McKillip, you don't need a review to want to own the book.
