King Harold Godwineson is one of history's shadowy figures, known mainly for his defeat and death at the Battle of Hastings. His true status and achievements have been overshadowed by the events of October 1066 and by the bias imposed by the Norman victory. In truth, he deserves to be recalled as one of the greatest rulers. Harold: The Last Anglo-Saxon King sets out to correct this distorted image by presenting Harold's life in its proper context, offering the first full-length critical study of his career in the years leading up to 1066. Ian Walker's carefully researched critique allows the reader to realistically assess the lives of both Harold and his rival William, significantly enhancing our knowledge of both.

This book provides a refreshing take on the eponymous Harold, as it focuses on his life, rather than on Duke William or the Battle of Hastings. The author delves deeply into old records in an attempt to flesh out our impression of this short-lived king; to a large extent he succeeds. Harold is presented as he probably really was in life: intelligent, energetic, shrewd, ambitious, and--at times--ruthless. Inevitably, we learn a great deal about the complicated politics of the time and Harold's remarkable family, including his father, Godwin (who doted on his bloodthirsty eldest son, Sweyn), and his vengeful younger brother, Tostig. If I have a quibble with the book, it is that Mr. Walker whole-heartedly supports William's fabricated story of Harold's oath--but this is a debate that will not be settled here or, doubtless, anytime soon!
