Â This is a lovely and charming work on the life of Helen Allingham and her life within England, with colourful drawings of British topography. Â Helen Allingham (1848-1926) was a British watercolourist and illustrator from the Victorian era. She contributed illustrations to a range of periodicals including 'The Graphic' newspaper, and made illustrations for the 1874 serialisation of Thomas HArdy's 'Far from the Madding Crowd'. Â Marcus Bourne Huish (1843-1921) was an English barrister, writer, and art dealer. He was the editor of 'The Art Journal' from 1881 to 1892 and was also the first Managing Director the Fine Art Society. Â Four pages of publisher's adverts to rear of text. Â Collated, complete. A lovely biography of the Victorian illustrator and watercolourist. Helen Allingham was a successful artist who studied at the Royal Academy School, later known as the Royal College of Art, and is recognised for her work in The Graphic newspaper, and her illustrations for Thomas Hardy's 'Far from the Madding Crowd' in Cornhill Magazine in 1874. Â Although women artists at the time would typically struggle to make an impact, Allingham was very influential and had an impact on the art of Vincent Van Gogh. Â Densely illustrated with eighty colour plates and one monochrome plate as the frontispiece. Collated, complete. Â With four pages of advertisements to the rear. In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally, smart. There is some bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. The hinges are strained but firm.
