I always thought that Samuel Beckett's plays were beyond my reach; too erudite? too obscure? but after seeing a brilliant production of "Happy Days" I became totally enthralled. While searching for a copy of the script, I accidently came across "Happy Days: The Production Notebook of Samuel Beckett". This was a book that I just had to have! I was not disappointed. I do not know if all playwrights are as meticulous in their notes when they direct their own plays but one could feel that Beckett was not finished with this play ... he was still living it. Editor, James Knowlson is thoroughly familiar with the text of the play and with Beckett's several productions. (The play was first written in English but Beckett's German and French translations were produced before it was performed on the London stage.) Knowlson not only interprets Beckett's shorthand and gives exact page referrences to the published script but is able to illuminate further with anecdotal information. As I said, there should be more books like this!
