While 1978's enjoyable Love Vibrations didn't race up the charts, Happy Birthday Baby is a more blatant attempt to court the disco market. While 1978's enjoyable Love Vibrations didn't race up the charts, Happy Birthday Baby is a more blatant attempt to court the disco market. As many jumped on disco's bandwagon, few were as eager and committed as Joe Simon. Actually, he was no stranger to the genre, cutting both "Get Down, Get Down (Get Down on the Floor)" and its dead ringer, "Music in My Bones," by early 1975. Those good tracks neither acquit nor explain the fey underpinnings of Happy Birthday Baby, a textbook dud that hit the shelves in 1979. The title track comes off as desperate as you'd imagine, with Simon sleepwalking through the barren lyrics and silly concept. Sex, for better or worse, figures in this effort as well. The icky "I Wanna Taste Your Love" and the simple-minded "If It's Good for Your Body (Then It's Good for Your Mind) are dancey, gauche, and flat-out weird. With such a botched concept and one bad idea after the other, the horrid proceedings of Happy Birthday Baby of course coalesced into some genuinely good bad songs. The super-fast and pointless "Make Every Moment Count" ends up being a fair Philly disco rip. The obligatory though oddly appealing "Hooked on Disco Music" finds Simon singing the genre's praises a good year or two too late. The album's only ballad, "I Still Love You," is a half-hearted affair. Happy Birthday Baby, produced by Simon and Raeford Gerald and arranged by Tony Camillo, has hackish exercise written all over it, but that doesn't stop it from being good dumb fun. ~ Jason Elias, Rovi
