Seller's Description:
Very Good. 4to-over 9¾"-12" tall. pp. 255. 255 pp. Tightly bound. Spine not compromised. Text is free of markings. No ownership markings. This copy is smyth sewn. Smyth sewing is a method of bookbinding where groups of folded pages (referred to as signatures) are stitched together using binder thread. Each folded signature is sewn together individually with multiple stitches and then joined with other signatures to create the complete book block. This is the traditional and best method of bookbinding.
If you are looking for a volume on Holbein with terrific reproductions, this is it. However, if you are looking for thorough discussions of Holbein's work, with cogent arguments and an orderly and recognizable methodological structure of organization, you will need to look elsewhere. Batschmann and Griener spend very little time on any one particular work (three paragraphs is about average) and do not develop any strikingly new or interesting arguments about Holbein's work. The basic information is there, but it is rather oddly and disjointedly organized, and while the pictures are superb, the writing is not.
