In 1923, Hank and his brother Peter take the Orphan Train to Nebraska where they become virtual servants on the Olsons' farm. When Peter runs away, Hank bears the Olsons' violent anger. Sure that his loneliness will kill him, Hank soon meets Molly McIntire, who, like Hank, trusts animals more than people. With Molly's help, Hank learns that orphans have rights, too.
