Divided into two parts, this handbook explores many methods used to compute frequencies for self sustained oscillations. The author presents the engineering formulae needed to calculate the acoustic resonant modes for ducts and cavities- it is a complete collection of models under one cover. Part I is concerned with many of the methods used to calculate acoustic resonances for internal flow paths inside turbomachinery for the conditions when the acoustic wavelength is much larger than the cavity dimensions (discrete resonator) and in which the wavelength is comparable to or smaller than the main flow path dimensions (distributed resonator). Part II shows how to compute the modes of instability for fluid oscillators that are self-sustained. These types of oscillations are termed instability-induced excitation (IIE) and include jets, wakes, and mixing layers. The Handbook includes a microcomputer disk containing FORTRAN 77 computer programs that were developed to perform the calculations described in the handbook which go beyond what is reasonably expected from a hand-held calculator.
