Heretofore, cuts and changes great and small have altered and marred previous recordings of one of the greatest of Baroque opera serias, but in George Petrou and the Orchestra of Patras' recording, the work is presented as Handel's audience first heard it: in all its blazing dramatic glory. Petrou is a vividly colorful and strongly rhythmic conductor, but he is also a terrific stage director who keeps the music and drama moving even in the extended recitatives. The singers are consistently convincing -- check out Mata Katsuli's chilling "Cor di padre," Mary-Ellen Nesi's feverish "Piu d'una tigre altero," and especially Tassis Christoyannis' furious "Empio per farti guerra" -- and the Orchestra of Patras plays with verve and astonishing accuracy.
