The publication for the first time of Gwen John's letters and notebooks provides invaluable insight into the life and inspiration of one of the most intriguing and enigmatic figures in twentieth century art. The artist Gwen John (1876-1939) led an exceptionally private life, dedicated to painting. After studying at the Slade and at Whistler's Academy in Paris, she settled in Paris in 1905, seeking out her income by modelling for Rodin. She converted to Catholicism in 1915, withdrawing to the suburban village of Meudon, where she remained until her death. Since her death her reputation has steadily grown and her intense figure studies and portraits with their sensitive, muted tones have earned her something like cult status. John did not write for publication, but as an important medium of expression for her. This selection of unabridged letters and extracts from her notebooks, illustrated by photographs and sketches, is drawn from the artist's personal archives.
