"Gunfight" promises to be a seminal work in its examination of America's four-centuries-long political battle over gun control and the right to bear arms. Winkler uses the landmark 2008 case District of Columbia v. Heller, which invalidated a law banning handguns in the nation's capital, as a springboard for a groundbreaking historical narrative.

An interesting work on the fight over the meaning of the second amendment. It provides for interesting reading and dispels several of the myths concerning gun control and gun rights. The style of the book is a two-sided sword. Interspersed with the development of the DC versus Heller Supreme Court case are interesting sections on history. In essence while the Second Amendment has been, for the preponderance of US history, considered as stopping the Federal government from interfering with State militias, state constitutions gave individuals the right to bear arms. However, the preponderance of states also had laws controlling the ownership and carrying of weapons. The last chapter discusses the opinion of DC versus Heller and that is very interesting because it was not what I had expected.
